Long ago, Lech and his people journeyed across the land in search of a place to call home. One evening, as the setting sun painted the sky deep red, Lech looked up and saw a magnificent white eagle resting in its nest high in an ancient oak.
Struck by the sight, Lech took it as a sign. He chose this place for his new settlement and named it Gniezno, from the Polish word gniazdo — nest. According to legend, the white eagle against the red evening sky inspired the symbols that would come to represent Poland.
Over the centuries, the White Eagle on a red shield became the heart of Polish heraldry. From it also come Poland’s national colours of white and red.
Today, the eagle and these colours carry a story that has endured for generations: a story of home, heritage and Polish independence.

Long ago, a brave mermaid swam up the Vistula River and chose the place where Warsaw now stands. Captured by a greedy merchant, she was rescued by the local fishermen, who admired her courage and kindness. Grateful for their help, the mermaid promised to protect the city and its people forever.
Armed with a sword and shield, she became the fearless Warsaw Mermaid — a symbol of bravery, freedom, and the enduring spirit of Poland’s capital.
Today, her monument stands proudly beside the Vistula, reminding generations that courage and loyalty will always defend the city.
